When we follow the norms of our society, we are participating to either maintain or challenge it. Norms provide us with an expected idea of how to behave, and function to provide order and predictability in society. Social norms are collectively held beliefs about what kind of behavior is appropriate in a given situation. They range from specific customs—for example, the Western custom of shaking hands with somebody when you meet them for the first time—to more general rules that govern behavior and influence our understanding of other people. These norms prescribe the appropriate way to respond in social situations but also that which should be avoided.
